This publication developed from an idea in 1985, to record in one document, the national laws for private investigators and security guards. From that time to this, our fifth revision, much has changed, both within the Law Enforcement community and the businesses and agencies involved with these professions. Today, more of us are working on a national basis rather than a state or neighboring state level and the need to know if we can legally operate in those states or who to contact is paramount. More of the regulating states are entering into reciprocal agreements to offer temporary or permanent licenses to individuals who are licensed in their home state to facilitate licensees. These organizations have utilized the information to benchmark their requirements. In the timeframe from 1987 until present, the original publication has grown
